La Maison provides support and relief to individuals at the end of their lives, with respect and dignity, in a calm and warm environment.
Services provided
La Maison has a capacity of 12 beds. The accommodation for everyone is a very comfortable private room. Several shared areas are available for patients and their loved ones: lounge, dining room, library, outdoor patio, etc.
Accommodations at La Maison is a service provided at no cost for the individual's stay. La Maison purchases their medication on their behalf; however, the charges are covered by the individual's private insurance or the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
Our interdisciplinary team provides care and services 24 hours a day: physicians, a pharmacist, a social worker, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, P.A.B. s, volunteer caregivers, and support staff.
They work together to improve the individual's comfort and quality of life. In addition, other advocates, whether for spiritual support or complementary approaches to care, join the team to meet all the individual's needs adequately. All the care and services provided reflect the values and philosophy of La Maison.
Care and services are organized to respect the privacy of family members, for whom it is possible to personalize their loved one's room and to sleep there if they wish to do so.
Services to Family Members
La Maison considers the family as members of the caregiving team. They are the significant people the patients have chosen to be near them. With them being welcomed in a family-style living environment, their needs, as they relate to the pending loss of a loved one, are integrated into the caregiving program and are generously met by the interdisciplinary team.
Care and services are organized so as to respect the privacy of family members, for whom it is possible to personalize their loved one's room and to sleep there if they wish to do so. They are supported and encouraged to take part in the caregiving and support of their loved ones in their final days, according to their capacity and the latter's wishes.
Service areas are made available to them so that they can experience La Maison's daily activities and highlight special events that may occur during their stay.
Following their loved one's passing; they will be offered support services. If required, they will be referred to specialized services.
What is medical aid in dying?
Medical aid in dying (MAID) is defined as "care consisting of administering medications or substances by a physician to a person, at the person's request, to relieve the person's suffering by causing the person's death".
MAID has been legal in Quebec since December 2015. The end-of-life criterion initially set out in the Act has only been applied since March 12, 2020. In March 2021, the federal government abolished the "reasonably foreseeable natural death" criterion to be entitled to medical assistance in dying.
See legislative information on the Quebec government website.
Medical aid in dying at La Maison de la Sérénité
Following the adoption by the Quebec National Assembly on June 9 of Bill 11 concerning end-of-life care in palliative care hospices, medical aid in dying is now available at La Maison de la Sérénité. This will meet the needs of our community while respecting the quality of care offered at La Maison and its mission. To be eligible for medical assistance in dying, a person must meet all the criteria set by the Quebec government.
This decision aligns with our values of respecting patients' choices, making their last days serene, and providing the best possible care in a quiet and welcoming environment.
Visiting Hours
Visitors of all ages are always allowed. There is no limit to the number of visitors unless restricted by current regulations. It is up to the patient to set that limit per their wishes.
However, visitors must respect the patient's needs and not disturb the residents. For security reasons, visitors are required to sign in and out.
